I’ve talked about charity: water before and i’m continually impressed with their great passion and high accountability as a charitable organization.  Like how they’re drilling wells in Ethiopia and using Google Earth to prove their water projects.  Like how they have live drilling videos to keep you updated and involved.  Like how they would initiate the September Birthday Campaign this month.

Scott Harrison, photographer and founder of charity: water turned 33 years old on September 7th.  For his birthday, he wants to raise $1.5 million to build 333 wells so 150,000 people could have clean drinking water. No small feat.  I’m challenged to expand my scope of vision when i realize he’s serious about this.  Scott is asking others to contribute $33 to fund wells in Ethiopia as a birthday gift.  I’d love for you to check it out, particularly if your birthday is in September.

In scott’s words.

“I started charity: water 2 years ago. We passionately believe everybody on earth should have clean water to drink.

So this year, I’m giving up my 33rd birthday so kids in Ethiopia can have more birthdays…

For my birthday, I’d love to raise $1.5 million to build 333 wells in Ethiopia.
Those wells can give more than 150,000 people clean and safe drinking water. To do that, I’m asking for your donations of $33, $330 or whatever you can give.

100% of all donations got DIRECTLY to water projects that will be proved on Google Earth. Even better, the first $400,000 we raise will be matched by a group of generous friends and sponsors.

So $33 = $66, and $330 = $660…

Thanks for your generosity!”

  1. You are so NOT 33 years old. But then I realized that’s not what this post is about :P

Btw, do you know of any other organizations similar to Scott’s (in effectiveness and donor accountability) that bring the Gospel into it, too?

  2. paulman, we are always up too late into the wee hours.

i know what you mean in terms of “bringing in the Gospel too.” but i think giving to a cause that helps peoples’ physical needs (even if that’s in of itself) is a cause close to the heart of God.

i understand if people want to perhaps “maximize” their giving to specific organizations that can do more. but for me personally, giving $33 for this cause is not something i need to “pray about,” i need and want to just do it cos of my faith.

Blood:Water Mission (which i have linked on my blogroll) is an organization that fights HIV/Aids and drills wells in Africa.. it’s a Christian organization but as far as i know, they don’t do any overt Gospel presentations. i’m sure that’s happening on a smaller scale but in terms of the stated vision and mission, it’s not written anywhere. but i believe their work is brings the Gospel, brings the good news.

but in terms of the melding both physical and spiritual needs overtly and directly, i’m still a huge fan of child sponsorship through Compassion. they do really incredible work that brings significant, eternal impact and transformation in the lives of many. i’m happy with their standard of accountability as well.

MochaClub.org is probably the most “accessible” to give for a lot of people cos it’s only $7/month.. smaller commitment, get more ppl involved, still making a great dent in the lives of others. also an initiative from a Christian organization (African Leadership).

and of course, GAIN with Power to Change does both as well.. i believe teaming up DRIME or JESUS Film, etc while drilling wells.

i will stop here for now cos i should sleep =p

but anyway, i’m a big fan of charity: water.. thanks to you paulman! you’re the one who first pointed them out to me!

  3. This is super. I stumbled onto charity:water while on twitter. Did a little googling and found your post. I’m with you 100%. Thanks for the other ngo that do similar work worldwide. Checking them out now.
