I had heard speculation that the Final 8 of this season’s American Idol was going to sing “Shout to the Lord” during Idol Gives Back. I didn’t think much of it but it ACTUALLY happened. As the closing song nonetheless! And of course with a huge Gospel choir behind them. And they sound great. Where did AI producers come up with this idea??! Perhaps trying to reach a certain demographic (i’ll play the cynical card), or just… because? And yet no surprise that they cut in Ben Stiller afterwards throwing around a few amusing bleeps.

What do you make of them changing “Jesus” to “Shepherd”?
I thought it was pretty cool. At first, I didn’t know if I should have been singing along with them, or stare furiously at my tv screen because AI had just taken over a special song.
Hey, that’s weird, last night when I saw them on tv, they were actually saying My Jesus in the beginning. And they weren’t dressed in white. Did they perform the song 2x?
to beth’s comment:
don’cha know? “Jesus” isn’t PC. i guess if you think about, the rest of the song CAN BE somewhat.. relatively.. ambiguous. kinda annoying but hey, baby steps right? but even so, i’m still impressed they did the song.
Hmmm, I was reading about this on Josh Harris’ blog (http://joshharris.com) yesterday. Apparently, on the Idol Gives Back show they replaced “Jesus” with “Shepherd” but then last night for the elimination episode, they put back the original lyrics and sang “My Jesus.” Not sure what’s going there.
If anyone watched the Dolly Parton episode, they actually sang a lot of songs with Jesus name in it: “Jesus and Gravity” and some Smoky Mountain Magic song. And they sang This Little Light of Mine.
So it’s weird that when they choose to do an actual song of worship that’s totally about Jesus, they leave out his name. What’s up with that?
